Everything You’ve Heard About Failing Schools Is Wrong | Mother Jones

Powerful piece here written by a journalist who spent several months in Mission High School in California. This tells the story of a school that is successful with its diverse population on every measure except the standardized tests. These tests are unable to capture the growth and learning that the students actually do.

This piece also takes on the media for dealing with surface-level reporting about schools and education. It’s difficult to get access to schools to really write about what’s going on in them–much easier to just do a story about the test scores.

We need more stories like this coming out of schools–maybe then we can fight back against the negative attack on teachers and schools.
